He stilled the storm to a whisper;
the waves of the sea were hushed.
There is a hush. A calm. Swish, swish, swish. A gentle breeze floating across the water.
Minutes ago a storm raged billowing the sea. Tumultuous waves bore down upon the boat causing it to careen dangerously to the side. The men on the boat clung to whatever they could get their hands on in their frightened state.
Could this be the end of their lives? Will they survive?
“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.” (Mark 4:39)
Not only did the wind die down, it became a whisper. Just enough to keep the boat moving to reach the shoreline on the other side of the sea.
A whisper. Just a breath. Sometimes the most extravagant thing God can do is to cause a stillness to come.
We’ve been running for so long, trying to stay strong and endure the storm, when God just wants us to stop and be still. Know that He is God and He is with us. God is waiting to speak to us when we are ready to listen.
Elijah wanted to hear God’s voice. He waited through a wind so strong it tore rocks apart. He waited through an earthquake and a fire. But ultimately, He found God through His still, small voice. (1 Kings 19)
The Bible doesn’t say how quiet it was but the NIV puts it this way:
After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire.
And after the fire came a gentle whisper (verse 12)
Whisper…to say something in confidence. “To speak softly, or under the breath, so as to be heard only by one near at hand…To prompt secretly or cautiously; to inform privately…A low, sibilant sound.” (http://biblehub.com/topical/w/whisper.htm)
In other words, God spoke to Elijah in such a personal way that He wanted Elijah in a secret place to share His most intimate thoughts with Elijah.
So often when I’m in the midst of a storm in my life I want God to proclaim to me what He wants me to do or how He is going fix it in the most extravagant of ways as possible. I want Him to perform some kind of miracle or make a loud statement that everyone can hear. But God is not in the business of making His declarations to us for all the world to see and hear. God is in the “be still and know” type business.
I am waiting
my heart is yearning
the whisper of Your voice.
To feel Your breath
upon my shoulder
and I’m reaching
as the breeze

in the depths of my being
it is You
whispering my name.

You are here

It’s often in the most unexpected, quietest of moments that God whispers in our ears. Privately, secretly, intimately.
When was the last time you heard God whisper your name?
