My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord;
in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee,
and will look up.
Psalm 5:3
What really is true prayer?
Breathing a sigh saying, “Thank you, Lord.”
Raising hands in the sky in a worshipful pose
Writing flowery words on a crisp, linen blank page
Filling a notebook just the same?
Bowing the head, eyes closed,
words spilling forth in hushed prose
Down on knees in great agony
Tears spilling forth pleading, “Not my will but yours.”
Does lying on my back in a wide open field
letting the breeze carry whispered words count?
Must sin always be confessed
Or can the body just rest
Speaking Jesus’s name over and over again
Must the Lord’s prayer always be modeled
Will God understand if that’s not how the heart follows?
Please, don’t think this irreverent, or silly or trite
Don’t scold for the questions written this night
For really and truly this poet wants to know
What truly is prayer for each human soul?
Maybe through all of this wandering (or is it wondering)
The walk of faith is a continual pondering
Why does everything have to be done just right
Eyes closed, head bowed, hands folded, knees down,
prayers spoken in sequential routes
What if Jesus is okay with however we pray
As long as we give Him our heart each and every day?

Why must people kneel down to pray?
If I really wanted to pray I’ll tell you what I’d do.
I’d go out into a great big field all alone or in the deep, deep woods
and I’d look up into the sky—up—up—up—into that lovely blue sky
that looks as if there was no end to its blueness.
And then I’d just feel a prayer.
